Remembering Professor Goldstein

Fitchburg State University mourns the passing of a valued member of the campus, Professor Stephen Goldstein, after a brief battle with illness.
Professor Goldstein taught at Fitchburg State for fourteen years within the Communications Media Department, focusing on Graphic Design, and dedicated his time to his department and his students. He received a Master’s of Fine Arts in Graphic Design from Boston University, founded his own design studio, Good Graphics, in 1980, and was a contributing writer to the 5th and 6th editions of Meggs’ History of Graphic Design.
Goldstein had taken part in various projects over his time on FSU’s campus, including his annual lectures on graphic design and related topics, the Butler Lectures. Matt Elicone, a film student who worked with Goldstein on the lectures had this to say, “The Butler Lectures brought amazing artists and creators to [Fitchburg State] that were extremely interesting and inspiring.”
Over his time at Fitchburg State, Goldstein had a great impact on his students and many of them will carry his influence for the remainder of their careers. Megan Pusateri Wormell, a Graphic Design Alumni, was greatly impacted during her time under Professor Goldstein. She had this to say about her time with him: “He always treated me with respect, always offered supportive criticism on my work, jumped through hoops with me to get me to graduate on time. From his classes came some of the strongest pieces in [my] portfolio, and I will be forever grateful for everything he did for me through my time at Fitchburg State.”
When asked for a for a statement, Dr. Wayne Munson, a Communications Media Professor at Fitchburg State had this to say: “Stephen was a close colleague and friend. He never stopped working. He had a passion for graphic design as well as the life of the mind. He never stopped learning. Over the past few years, his speakers’ series was the product of this passion for non-stop learning and the many professional contacts he made and kept, over several decades, in Boston as well as China. He cared deeply about his students and that they be well-prepared when they leave FSU.”
Students feel the impact of his loss on campus already, fondly remembering their time with him. Arianna Martinez had this to say: “Professor Goldstein taught me skills and techniques in typography I’ll never forget. His old-school ways were unique and he was a strong influence. Thank you, Professor, we miss you.”
