Thursday, January 24th- The Bridgewater State Bears (5-13) defeated Fitchburg State (8-10) 95-90 Thursday night, bringing the team’s win streak to an end.
The Falcons started the game off strong on a 6-0 run, led by Junior guard Nicholas Tracy. The Bears quickly battled back to take the lead 14-8 midway through the first half.
The Bears later built a sizeable lead by going on an 8-0 run to make the score 22-14, thanks in large part to knocking down a couple 3-pointers off costly Fitchburg turnovers.
Bridgewater took a commanding 41-28 lead at half time, the 13-point deficit being the largest for the Falcons in the game.
The Falcons cut into the Bears lead in the second half, coming within four to five points multiple times. However, the Bears never relinquished the lead, going back up by 11 points with only 1:35 left in the game.
Fitchburg State did not give up. Junior guard Andre Ruff hit a couple of clutch three pointers down the stretch to bring the Falcons within three, 93-90, with 5 seconds to go. The Falcons were forced to foul to stop the clock, resulting in two made free throws for Bears junior Ryan Carney, sealing the game for Bridgewater State.
Bridgewater had five players score in double figures including Carney with 21 points and 9 assists, and Dimitri St. Louis with a team high 25 points. Junior Rayshon Ward and Sophomore Nick Crocker each tallied 16 points. Collectively, the Bears shot 60.3 percent from the field and 64.7 percent from behind the 3-point arc.
The Falcons meanwhile were led by Tracy who scored a game high 29 points. Ruff contributed 6 assists and 5 steals to go along with his 16 points, while junior Tyrell St. John and senior Jonathan Perez also scored in the double digits. Fitchburg State only shot 45.3% from the field and were significantly outrebounded 41-27.
