University Hosts Semester Plan-A-Palooza

University Hosts Semester Plan-A-Palooza

Plan Palooza

By Oliva Koravos

The Career Counseling and Advising Center held a “Semester Plan-A-Palooza” from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m., as well as from 3:30 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 30th. This department of FSU works with students and the many academic challenges that can come their way.  The event was located in Hammond G19 and sought to teach students time management strategies. Unhelpful work habits, such as procrastination and the stress that comes with these tendencies were discussed, as well as why these students might continue these habits.
The seminar covered what students can do to improve their academic and personal mindsets. Firstly, attendants were taught that they should try to better know themselves and their weaknesses so they don’t set themselves up for failure in their courses at FSU. In addition, to focus not just on strict requirements and deadlines, but also ones that make students days’ fun and livable. In addition, students were told to think about planning ahead by looking it as scheduling their most ideal week. Time management is about planning, students learned from seminar speakers, but also learning more about oneself.
Andy Linscott, Academic Advisor and Coach at Fitchburg State University commented on the importance of not only holding these workshops but having students attend them as well. “Giving students really concrete skills for how to manage time and what to do if their current time management strategy isn’t working, that is 50% of the battle for most students.” The workshop provided concrete resources for students, such as a weekly study plan sheet, a time diary to better manage time their busy schedules, a written example of a note-taking calendar, and a Spring 2019 Semester at a Glance calendar.
The Career Counseling and Advising Center hours of operation are from Monday-Friday 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. The center offers walk-in hours from 4-6 p.m. Tuesdays, and 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesdays in Hammond room 318.
