Dogs Behind Caged in Pen (Tim Walsh)

By Makenzie MacDonald
We all can awe over an adorable video of a cat and dog, pictures of cubs, bunnies or monkeys, but we do not see the reality of some of those species fates. According to the Humane Society International Organization’s website, species such as hamsters, guinea pigs, rabbits, birds, chimpanzees, cats, dogs, etc., are commonly used when it comes to testing products to ensure they are safe for humans to use.
An innocent animal being tortured and or killed just because it’s fur is soft and perfectly colored or to make sure products will not cause harm to humans is disgraceful. The reality of animal cruelty is something so many people say they are against, because no one should ever want to harm an animal, yet wearing or using products that are involved in the action still makes you culpable.
Stated on the Canada Goose Inc. website, “We do not condone any willful mistreatment, neglect, or acts that maliciously cause animals undue suffering.” However, if they do not subject themselves to a level of harm to animals, would not be killing them just for their fur be torture enough? Wolves were not placed on this planet to only be killed for an insanely overpriced jacket or vest, want to know why they’re here? To live and thrive in their own environment.
Those who defend the brand, explaining that it is “okay” because of the increasing population of wolves. Then what about humans? If you want to talk about increasing population, according to the Our World in Data Organization’s website, “200 years ago there were less than one billion humans living on earth. Today, according to UN calculations there are over 7 billion of us.”
That means in only a couple of centuries “world population was three times greater than during the entire previous history of humanity—an increase from 1.5 to 6.1 billion in just 100 years.” What is the solution to that statistic? Are we going to blatantly kill off half of the human population?
Nature meets its own demise through predator and prey, natural death of age or sickness, something that is not caused by the human race. Altering the lifespan of an animal is cruel, especially if they are viewed and used for materialistic products.
The People For the Ethical Treatment of Animals Organization (PETA) continues to inform people of constant companies or brands that test on animals or use animals before selling products, and offer alternatives for consumers.
PETA explains that many cosmetic companies declare they do not test on animals in the United States, but they may ship their products to other countries, such as China, to be tested on animals before sale. Cosmetic companies including NARS Cosmetics, Estee Lauder, Benefit Cosmetics, Bobbi Brown, MAKE UP FOR EVER, and more are just a few that still have deadly tests performed on animals in China.
A couple of the ‘thumbs up’ cosmetic companies that obtain PETA’s criteria to be considered Cruelty Free, Vegan, or both are NYX Professional Makeup, Tarte Cosmetics, Too Faced COLOURPOP, Wet N’ Wild,Kat Von D Beauty, and more.
However, PETA warns on their website, “Don’t be fooled by claims on a label that state that a product wasn’t tested on animals. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration doesn’t regulate “cruelty-free” or “not tested on animals” packaging labels, so companies can put this on their packaging even if the product or ingredients have been tested on animals.”
But PETA provides an extensive list of companies that do not test on animals on their website, https://www.mediapeta.com/peta/PDF/companiesdonttest.pdf.
Throw your products away that do not care enough to keep animals safe, and do not support companies that kill animals for their fur, snakes for their skin, etc. Promoting their products degrades the love you say you have for animals. Show you care for the animals you awe over on social media.

It’s 2019 and there are so many great cruelty-free brands available in stores everywhere. There is no excuse for testing on animals (or buying products that are)!
