Virginia Wins Men's First National Basketball Title

NCAA Basketball Final Four Championship Game
Kyle Guy celebrates his 85-77 win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders (Jonathan Newton/Washington Post)

By Jaly Marquez
Last year, the Virginia Cavaliers experienced a huge upset as the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16 seed in the NCAA men’s basketball tournament. This year, the Cavaliers had mounting pressures to try and redeem themselves after an unfortunate early finish the year prior. It’s safe to say that they did, in fact, redeem themselves and they did it all in the tournament where anything is possible.
This year instead of being the #1 seed once again, they fell behind and were the #2 seed. The Cavaliers almost had a case of history repeating itself early on when they were falling behind in a team that was ranked as 16th seed, Gardner-Webb, in the opening round. But this time, they overcame victoriously and were able to advance in the next round to beat Purdue in the Elite Eight, and then again to beat Auburn in the Final Four.
The Virginia Cavaliers were the fan favorites for many as they would be claiming their very first Championship title. Being able to take home the trophy was something that was high on their lists. Their competition, the Texas Tech Red Raiders, were a team also worthy of taking home the trophy as both teams worked hard year-round, tirelessly for that one moment. Both teams wanted to be the NCAA Division I National Champions but there could only be one and after a nail-biting overtime, the Cavaliers did their job to be able to take home the win.
The MVP of the night was chosen to be Kyle Guy. Guy was the Final Four’s most outstanding player after his gameplay was crucial to landing the Cavaliers in the championship game and also helping them win their first national title. Joining Guy on the all-tournament team were his teammates Ty Jerome, and De’Andre Hunter. The three of them were the main components in bringing the Cavaliers a victory to celebrate at home.
A formal goodbye to March Madness, until next year where brackets will be destroyed and hopes, will be crushed as this year’s tournament is officially over. Time to start prepping for next year and a long farewell to one of college basketball’s greatest player, Zion Williamson, as he declares for the draft and our days of watching him play college basketball are long gone. The next big day in college basketball is June 20, 2019, as the NBA draft airs and our favorite basketball players move on to the next chapter of their lives as professional basketball players.
