On Apr. 18, 2019, Fitchburg State University, per tradition, cancelled classes for all students in order to host the annual Spring Convocation. This is an event where high-achieving students both nominated by professors and through personal submittance have the chance to be awarded and recognized for their academic achievements. This event was led by President Lapidus who began the ceremony with an address to the audience, which consisted of students, staff, members of higher education, friends, and family.
The students being recognized ranged from being members of Dean’s List, President’s List, to the Honors Program, with many involved in various extracurricular activities that benefit their growth and that of Fitchburg State University. Held in Weston Auditorium at 2 p.m. in the afternoon, the turnout was high with not a single seat left unoccupied. The awards were presented by both the Chair of the department as well as the President of the University, Richard Lapidus.
Antanya Cheyenne Winley, a junior Theater major won her first award. When asked about what this achievement meant to her, Winley commented, “This award is important to me because it highlights the hard work I put into school. The challenging part about this was trying to maintain Dean’s List during my semesters.” Winley won the “Esoteric Society Scholarship” which is given to a full-time undergraduate student who maintains a 2.5 GPA. A mantra that Winley lives by is, “You either entertain your obstacle or your opportunity.”
Another Fitchburg State undergraduate who won an award was Crystal Aneke, a sophomore who is working towards a Political Science major and Criminal Justice minor. Aneke won the “Student Government Association” and the “Danielle L. Finch Memorial Scholarship.” Aneke spoke about how her hard work and positivity contributed towards her achievements. “The most challenging part about trying to get this award was trying to keep my faith in everything I do, putting my best foot forward and making sure everything I present is good.” these awards are important to me because it shows character…”Aneke had family members by her side supporting her as she received one of the over 250 awards given to students on this day.
