Sunday April 4, our televisions were blessed with the brief, but always entertaining Screen Actors Guild Awards. The SAG Awards are the only ceremony where the focus is solely on the performance of an actor or ensemble in motion pictures, television shows, and new media programs. The awards show was shortened and pre-taped due to COVID-19 restrictions this year as well as having no host, red carpet, or gala. While actors and actresses may not have been able to flaunt their fashionable attire on the red carpet, they still stunned the audience with their both classic and daring choices. So, who were the best dressed stars on Zoom? The Queen’s Gambit actress Anya Taylor stunned in a nude Vera Wang dress showing it off via Instagram for viewers. Jared Leto stepped out in a custom lavender Gucci suit paired with a scarf and grey boots. I found that while The Crown ruled the TV Drama categories star, Emma Corrin looked less than regal in her Prada ensemble. Viola Davis wowed in a bright green Louis Vuitton gown and continued to wow us when she took home the Best Female Actor in a Leading Role, Motion Picture Award. My choices for best dressed go to Jonathan Bailey, Nicole Kidman, and Kerry Washington. Some actors who missed the mark included Rhea Seehorn and Maria Bakalova. While some stars may have won best dressed; they did not prevail in awards, which is an important stop on the way to an Oscar win.

People often look towards awards shows earlier in the season to speculate who the future Oscar winners will be. The SAG awards are especially used for the predictions since actors make up the biggest voting branch in the academy. Of course, there are always upsets, but half the fun is making bets on who will come out victorious. The Trials of the Chicago 7 had a much-needed win in one of the top SAG award categories Best Motion Picture Ensemble; this might be the extra boost needed to secure its spot for Best Picture after some previous losses during the season. Viola Davis caused a bit of an upset pushing out Carey Mulligan for Best Female Actor in a Leading Role, Motion Picture Award; that opens the door of a high possibility for her to also come out on the other side of award season with an Oscar win for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Chadwick Boseman is looking to be a shoe in for the Actor in a Leading Role Oscar after taking home the parallel SAG Award for the film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.  No matter what the outcome of the SAG Awards, the Oscars are going to be a close race for all.
