The Fitchburg State Women’s Softball team took on Framingham State in a double header on Saturday, April 24. Framingham came into the day at 20-5, 6-0 in the conference standings. The Falcons split the games, losing the first 5-1, before taking home an important win in the second game 3-2. With the win, the Falcons improved to 9-7, 3-3 in the conference standings.

The Rams were able to take the first game by jumping out to a multiple run lead in the early innings of the game. The Falcons had a few scoring chances that were ultimately shut down by a stellar pitching performance by Laela Pepin. Pepin went five innings without allowing an earned run. Fitchburg was able to salvage a single run, scoring on a fielder’s choice after a sacrifice bunt. Infielder Gwendolyn Carpenter led the way offensively for the Rams, driving in a pair of runs throughout the game. Molly Grass had the lone RBI for Fitchburg in a quiet offensive performance for the Falcons. Taylor Colvin picked up the loss, going seven innings and allowing three earned runs.

In the second game of the day, the Falcons put it all together for an impressive walkoff win. Despite falling behind early, Fitchburg put together a rally in the bottom of the second, plating two runs, including a solo home run from Audrey Johnson. The Rams battled back to tie the game at two in the third inning, scoring on a wild pitch. The game would stay locked at two until the bottom of the seventh, when Lauren Kirkconnell singled up the middle, driving home Lundyn Forcier for the winning run. Taylor Colvin picked up the win in the second game, relieving Sarah Cahill in the fifth inning. Colvin threw three shutout innings, striking out two batters and allowing no hits. Ally Moran was tagged with the loss for Framingham, throwing 6 full innings while letting up two earned runs.

Only the first two games that teams play against each other count towards the conference standings, and the Rams took both of those games on Friday afternoon. Today’s win however, should provide Fitchburg with some much needed momentum for its upcoming stretch. The Falcons will look to take that momentum into May, as they take on Worcester State for a double header on the 30th. The Falcons will look to pick up a few more wins before heading into the playoffs.
