Letter to the Editor
To the editor,
I am writing in response to a recent opinion piece published in The Point that enumerated allegations surrounding the recent production of the play “Extremities.”
The writer makes repeated references to the university showing a lack of concern for the allegations as presented and argues the production should have been shut down so they could be investigated. I can confirm that the university is, indeed, conducting a comprehensive inquiry into the matters alleged.
This inquiry will take time to complete, however, because the facts of the case are in dispute. Shutting down the play in the meantime was not a practical option as the production was mounted as part of a credit-bearing academic course, and its cancellation would have had wider impacts.
The university was not given the opportunity to respond to the piece before its publication. Had we been, we would have stated that we are committed to seeing this process to completion and ensuring our institutional values are followed.
