Falcons Field Hockey Capture First Win
The Fitchburg State University field hockey team picked up their first win of the year on Friday the 20th of September. The Falcons beat Framingham State 4-2, their win was a wire-to-wire victory never trailing in the game, scoring in all four quarters. Their dominant victory came down to the fact that they outshot the Rams 26-10. Watching the game the Rams goalie saved 16 shots out of the total 20 shot on goal and the Falcons could have scored a few more times if it was not for that
In the first quarter, the Rams had their best chance of the game to score on a penalty shot and ended up hitting the post and keeping the game tied at 0-0. The first Falcons goal was scored by junior forward Sophia Yates putting the Falcons up 1-0, and the goal came from a penalty corner where freshman midfielder Samantha Jones found Yates on the other side of the cage for an easy goal. The rest of the first quarter was dominated by the Falcons as the Rams could not find any rhythm.
The second quarter started off well for the Falcons as Jones got on the board with a goal of her own on a pass that was thrown in the air by senior forward Autumn Tibbetts. The second quarter, much like the first quarter, was once again dominated by the Falcons and heading into halftime the Falcons had a commanding 2-0 lead that seemed as though would be enough to hold off the Rams as they only had one shot on Falcons that was saved easily by senior goalie Jenna Morse.
The first half was was controlled by the Falcons and it seemed that it would continue for the rest of the game. This was until the Rams scored two goals within forty-eight seconds of one another. The Falcons looked as though they were flustered after the second goal slipped in. The Falcons kept their composure and responded with a goal just a few minutes later. The goal came from the stick of Tibbetts for her first goal of the game. Tibbett was a standout for the Falcons in this game as she had a game-high ten shots with a goal and an assist. The Falcons continued their pressure and went into the final quarter up 3-2.
In the final quarter of the game not much was happening for either team as there were no shots on goal for the first few minutes. This was until Sophia Yates scored her second goal of the game and her team-leading 4th goal of the season. This goal came from an assist by senior midfielder Alexis Raymond. This goal all but put the game away for the Falcons as the Rams could not score any goals to end the game and the Falcons won their first game of the year.
This win for the Falcons is a big one as this was their first conference game of the year and they are currently 1-0 in conference play. This game is a good start for the Falcons if they want to make a long playoff push this season.
