Falcons Secure 3-0 Victory Against Worcester State in Conference Opener
The Fitchburg State women’s field hockey team took down Worcester State earning their second conference win of the season with a 3-0 result on Tuesday night October 1st. High intensity on defense helped pave the way for the Falcons to secure the victory.
Both teams came out with very strong, trading possessions frequently. Just like how you would expect a competitive conference game to be executed. The first period continued to go back and forth until the last minute of the period. The Falcons received a penalty corner which eventually found the stick of Samantha Jones, a freshman midfielder. She then finished her shot right in the bottom left corner of the net.
The second quarter continued with the Fitchburg State Falcons having a lot of pressure and dominating on the offensive side. Back and forth with a 1-0 score until the whistle blew to end the first half of the game. Which gave the Falcons momentum heading into the second half.
The second half opened with high intensity defense from both squads. With five minutes officially off the clock in the second half, the Falcons attacked the Lancers aggressively looking to score. A Worcester State turnover led to a counterattack that featured great ball movement between Jones and Olivia Narkevicius, a junior forward for the Falcons. Jones dished a great pass over to Narkevicius who fell to her knees then quickly recovered and scored, flipping the ball up and into the left corner of the net.
The excellent execution gave the falcons a comfortable 2-0 lead with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Very energetic play from both sides led to continuous back and forth action as the Lancers were desperate to get back in the game. However, the Falcons held their composure and continued to be aggressive.
With 2:40 remaining on the clock, the Falcons attacked the Lancers and drew a penalty stroke when Lancer senior goalkeeper Madison Ferrara committed a foul on Falcon Autumn Tibbets, a senior forward. The Falcons chose Samantha Yates, a junior defender, to take the penalty shot. It proved to be a great decision by the Falcons, as Yates netted the ball right over the left shoulder of Ferrara to give them a 3-0 cushion.
The Falcons held on to the lead throughout the entire last period of the game, eventually deflating the Lancers intensity. After 15 minutes of play, the Fitchburg State University women’s field hockey team brought home the win.
Fitchburg State’s women’s field hockey team displayed a great performance to secure this conference win against the Worcester State University lancers. Led by a great defensive performance with the Falcons senior goalkeeper Jenna Morse posting a shutout with 5 spectacular saves..
The Falcons once again were very aggressive on the offensive side of the end. Keeping possession of the ball most of the match which resulted with plenty of shots. The Fitchburg State University women’s field hockey team took a total of 16 shots with 12 shots on goal. While the Worcester State University women’s field hockey team took a total of 7 shots with 5 shots on goal. The Falcons took a total of 14 penalty corners with the Lancers taking a total of 5 penalty corners. The Fitchburg State University women’s field hockey team is now 3-0 in conference play, performing extremely well.
