Fitchburg State Men’s Cross-Country Shines in 2024 Season, Clinches All-Conference Honors and Weekly Awards
The Fitchburg State University men’s cross-country team showcased a remarkable season in 2024, marked by individual honors, competitive placements, and impressive team spirit. Ranked third in the MASCAC preseason poll, the Falcons exceeded expectations from the start, claiming victory at their season opener, the Jim Sheehan Memorial Invitational, with a near-perfect score.
Throughout the season, team members frequently earned recognition for their achievements. Senior Taban Manyok and freshman Samuel Edwards both claimed MASCAC weekly honors multiple times, highlighting their individual contributions to the Falcons’ successes. Manyok, named MASCAC Runner of the Week twice, delivered consistently strong performances and served as an essential veteran presence for the squad. Meanwhile, Edwards was awarded MASCAC Rookie of the Week on multiple occasions, proving to be a powerful addition to the team in his first collegiate season.
The team placed third at the MASCAC Championships on November 2, with standout performances from key athletes. Junior Michael Burns, along with Edwards and Manyok, was named to the 2024 MASCAC Men’s Cross Country All-Conference Team, underscoring the depth of talent within the lineup. This honor capped off an impressive year for Burns, who regularly demonstrated resilience and strategic pacing, contributing to the Falcons’ success at every meet.
Aside from their MASCAC achievements, the Falcons faced a rigorous schedule of regional competitions. Highlights included a second-place finish at the Knights Maple Syrup Challenge and a strong showing at the Founding Tree 8K, where the team placed second among 12 teams. These results showcased the Falcons’ ability to compete at a high level across diverse terrains and against varied competition.
The team’s competitive drive and cohesion were also evident during challenging races, including the Connecticut College Invitational, where they competed against some of the top collegiate teams in the region. Although they placed lower in some events, each race provided valuable experience and opportunities for individual growth, fostering a deep team resilience.
Looking ahead, Fitchburg State’s men’s cross-country team is well-positioned to build on this successful season. With talented runners like Edwards continuing to develop and returning veterans eager to push their limits, the Falcons have established themselves as a formidable force in MASCAC competition.
