Falcons Advance with Dominant Shutout Over Buccaneers
FITCHBURG, MA – The Fitchburg State University men’s soccer team cruised into the MASCAC semifinals with a decisive 4-0 victory over Mass—Maritime Academy in quarterfinal action on Wednesday afternoon at Elliot Field. A standout performance from freshman Ajani Guzman, who delivered a hat trick and an assist, fueled the Falcons to the next round.
The Falcons, entering the tournament as the No. 3 seed, struck first in the 15th minute. Guzman converted a slick pass from fellow freshman Justin Job to open the scoring with a well-placed shot to the right side of the net. Despite the Buccaneers’ push to equalize, Fitchburg State goalkeeper Alexander Carvalho delivered a critical save in the 29th minute, stopping a penalty kick by Mass—Maritime’s Brody Calvert to preserve the lead.
Following halftime, the Falcons wasted no time extending their advantage. Less than a minute into the second half, Guzman struck again, doubling the lead with his second goal. The momentum continued just six minutes later when Guzman turned playmaker, assisting sophomore Julian Correia-Estrada for his first collegiate goal.
Fitchburg State’s offensive pressure did not let up. Guzman completed his hat trick in the 68th minute, capitalizing on a setup from William Badger with a sharp finish inside the near post. The Falcons celebrated their dominance as the clock wound down, securing a convincing 4-0 victory and a spot in the semifinals.
Carvalho stood tall in the net, making 12 saves to record the shutout. While Mass. Maritime held a 21-12 advantage in shots, Fitchburg State’s defense held firm, limiting the quality of the Buccaneers’ chances. Carvalho’s penalty save in the first half was the turning point, maintaining the Falcons’ momentum.
For Guzman, the game was a masterclass in offensive efficiency. With three goals and an assist, he accounted for all four Fitchburg State scores. Correia-Estrada also enjoyed a milestone moment, notching his first collegiate goal, while Job and Badger added assists in the dominant team effort.
This victory marked Fitchburg State’s 27th win in 48 all-time meetings with Mass. Maritime. The Falcons now boast a 9-7-3 overall record and advance to the semifinals, where they will face second-seeded Worcester State. The Buccaneers, concluding their season at 3-12-1, were outmatched despite their persistent effort.
The Falcons’ success reflects their strong season, overcoming early challenges to finish third in the MASCAC standings. Wednesday’s victory showcased their balance of youthful energy and veteran composure, led by Guzman’s brilliance and Carvalho’s resilience.
With a trip to the championship game on the line, Fitchburg State will look to maintain its sharp form against Worcester State. If the Falcons can replicate the intensity and teamwork displayed in this quarterfinal, they stand a strong chance of advancing to the title match.
Fitchburg State continues to soar, and their sights are firmly set on bringing home the MASCAC crown.
