Dexter Brown, a junior defensive lineman for Fitchburg State football, played a key role in the second win of the season for the Falcons. He had a great performance in the 26-6 victory over Vermont State Castleton Spartans on Saturday, October 26th. This marked the Falcons’ first Mascac victory since 2019. Brown totaled five tackles on four solo stops and one assisted tackle as well as one sack and two tackles for loss.
Dexter’s journey into football has been nothing short of inspiring as his main goal is to establish himself as a leader and key player on the team. There have been several ups and downs for Dexter as a first-year Junior on the Fitchburg States football team.
After spending a long time away from the sport he loves to compete in, Brown credits fall camp for helping him get back on track. “I try to be like a sponge, soaking up knowledge from my coaches and teammates,” he stated. Being coachable is very important in sports and to Dexter especially, who continues to apply what he is learning on the field.
Winning Rookie of the Week is a very important award for Brown. “It means a lot to me, especially being somewhat new to the Fitchburg community.” Dexter is a very down-to-earth athlete stating he has people around him. “I get tons of support from my coaches and teammates so this wouldn’t have been possible without them, most importantly we got the win, that’s what matters the most.”
Dexter has a very unique preparation routine, as his mental game starts way before kickoff. He dedicates the beginning of each week to studying film and analyzing his opponents’ tendencies. “I like to visualize myself on the field in key plays and areas where I can help the team the most. I always like to listen to music as well as say a prayer before the game starts.”
Outside the game of football, Dexter said he loves playing basketball. “It’s a great way to help me get my mind off the game and relax with my friends.” Being a student-athlete can be very stressful. So it is very important to be able to take a mental break and enjoy some time away from your sport when possible.
With the season well under way, Dexter remains hopeful about the team’s potential.” The best is yet to come. We’re a young team and have a lot of new players like myself. But, overall, we had some losses that were tougher than others but it’s part of the game. I feel that we are starting to click as a whole offensively and defensively and we have three more games to show it. So definitely don’t be surprised if you see a couple more wins for Falcon football!”
Dexter Brown is a star to watch, and with his hard work, determination and team-first mentality. He is sure and determined to make a significant impact throughout the rest of the season.
