Student set to travel for a great cause

Orphanage at Ho Chi Mihn City, Vietnam

While most Fitchburg State students plan their summer vacations around jobs, summer classes, and going to the beach, one student is planning to spend her time helping others across the globe. Arlyn Murphy, a junior special-education major at FSU, will be traveling to Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam this summer to volunteer at an orphanage. The non-profit orphanage, which is run by Murphy’s cousin, Diana Collins, also features a home for boys and a home for girls where Murphy will also be spending her time, as she says, “providing basic child care needs and playing with the children.”
To help offset travel cost and the cost of living while she is in Vietnam, Murphy plans to hold a fundraiser at the Elks in her hometown of Lowell. The fundraiser, a night of music, games, and dancing, will take place on March 25 at 7 p.m. “All are welcomed!” says Murphy.
She explained that when she received the invitation to travel to Vietnam from Collins, she was ecstatic. To take advantage of the opportunity that she views as once in a lifetime, Murphy expresses her desire to do as much as she can for the children while she is there, as well as learn about the Vietnamese first-hand.
“I’m looking forward to not only learning about a new culture but also identifying any problems that the orphanage might be facing and doing her best to solve them,” Murphy says.  “I want to see the world, and if I can do something useful and good while traveling, it makes it that much more memorable and that much more important to me.”
“I love helping people and I love traveling,” says Murphy. “I’m excited for the trip of a lifetime.”
