Fitchburg High’s finest distance runners are considering attending Fitchburg State this coming fall.

Fitchburg High School has four distance runners that would be great additions to any college track team. Jason Bugarin, Diosmar Reynoso, Connor Dufour and Josh LeShane are all stand-out track runners and, together, scored most of the high school’s points this indoor season. Bugarin excels in the the two mile and the one mile, Dufour in the mile and 1000 meter, LeShane in the 1000 meter and Reynoso in the 600 meter as well as the 1000 meter. These athletes have put in the work for four years and strived to end their high school careers on a high note.

Diosmar Reynoso, who is known to be the fastest of the bunch, has sent in all of the application requirements for admission to FSU. This small but quick student athlete is aiming to major in criminal justice, and continue to run as well as play baseball. Whether it’s on the track or on the diamond, he is is an athlete; it is when Reynoso is off the track, however, that we can learn from this young man.  As a child growing up in the Dominican Republic, he saw it all, good and bad. Reynoso first moved to New York but quickly relocated to Fitchburg. As a freshman year in Fitchburg, he wanted to run and play baseball, but the language barrier became a huge roadblock for these plans; it was a struggle for Reynoso to learn and to become a part of these teams. Regardless, he stuck it out and now is looking to attend college and graduate in four years with a bachelor’s degree.

On a different note, Josh LeShane may take a different path and attend Westfield State, a known rival of Fitchburg State. Another runner that is truly an all-around athlete, LeShane has been weighing his options between Westfield and Fitchburg for the past few years.  LeShane seems unsure of his readiness to compete at the college level, but his recruitment letter from Fitchburg has boosted his confidence; the lack of such a letter from Westfield, however, can be troublesome. Attending FSU could land LeShane one of the top spots on the team and a chance to compete in championship races. Without confirmed recruitment from Westfield State, FSU could gain a secret weapon that is LeShane.

Jason Bugarin, arguably the best out of the four, has been heavily recruited by other colleges and may have pushed FSU a little further down on the list – as a Division 3 school, Fitchburg State is not allowed to offer athletes scholarships. This can be a slight turn off for student athletes like Bugarin, as he has stated that the more money he can get from a school, the more likely he is to attend that school.  Bugarin mentioned tentative plans to attend WPI in the fall.

Gaining even one of these four athletes would increase Fitchburg State’s chance of landing at the top of the MASCAC conference; this is a slightly touchy conference, as rival school Westfield State seems to come out on top of this conference quite often. With the strong possibility of adding at least Diosmar to the mix, the team will add one more mid-distance runner that can snag valuable points for the team. Each of these candidates have a good work ethic, both on the track and in the classroom.

Looking forward, these seniors are graduating in the next few months and will have that tough decision as to where to attend school in the fall made. The FSU community welcomes these four with open arms with hopes to see them on Fitchburg State track when the season starts up in November.
