Hey Sports fans, it’s Tuesday and you know what that means. It’s time for the weekly sports update!

Local Sports:
Falcon’s football played against the men of Western Conn. State at Elliot Field Saturday afternoon. After a hard fought battle,the Falcons failed to punch in the game winning score in overtime and lost with a final score of 20-14.

Falcons started off slow, failing to score and falling behind 14-0, until a third quarter touchdown pass from Garrett Dellechiaie to Phillip Sainte-Juste, with just under two minutes left, made the score 14-6. Falcons needed another touchdown and two points before the end of the fourth. Falcons came into the fourth with the drive and initiative to not go down without a fight. With 11:33 left in the 4th, senior linebacker Junior Louissaint gave the Falcons the momentum they needed to get back into this game. Kendall Perry ran in for his second rushing touchdown of the season.

Heading into overtime the score was 14 all and it was anyone’s game. The Falcons marched down the field on the first possession of overtime but were stopped at the one yard line. In the end, Fitchburg was unable to win the game and final score was 20-14. Falcons are 5-2 on the season and now have a bye week.

Fitchburg State Cross Country raced in the 9th running of the Saints Invitational at Franklin Park in Dorchester this past Friday. Over 360 runners from 19 colleges competed in the event. Both the men and women’s cross country teams placed 6th for the event.

Nichole Gaffney place 16th for the women with a time of 21:23 in the 5k. Jenae Harrison placed 26th with a time of 21:46. Both teams now have a bye week before they race in MASCAC championship in Williamstown of Saturday, Nov. 1.

Falcon’s Mens Soccer faced Framingham on home turf on Oct 18. Falcons defeated Framingham by a score of 2-0. Senior defenseman Brett Smith and Junior midfielder Josh Hofer both found the net for the first time in their college careers. The Falcons now go on to face WPI in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday Oct. 22 at 4 pm.

Falcon’s Womens Soccer also faced Framingham on Oct. 18 at Framingham but were not as successful as the men were. They lost 4-0. They now go on to face Umass Dartmouth at home on Oct. 23 for a 7 pm game.

Falcon’s Womens Field Hockey faced Western Conn at their home turf in Danbury, Conn. on Oct. 17. The Falcon women took the lead with a goal by sophomore forward Stephanie Stearns but it was short lived when West Conn scored two back to back goals. The final score was 2-1. The field hockey team now hosts Umass Dartmouth tonight at 7 pm.

Professional Sports:

NFL:
Patriots took on the New York Jets this past Thursday in Foxboro. Tom Brady threw for 261 yards and 3 touchdowns. Two of those touchdowns were to Shane Vereen and the other to Danny Amendola. The Patriots also scored 2 field goals which lead to the Patriots pulling off their closest win of the season 27-25. The Patriots defense blocked a late game field goal which would have won the Jets the game by 1 point. The Patriots are 5-2 and now face the Chicago Bears at Foxboro on Oct. 26 with a 1 pm kickoff.

NHL:
Boston Bruins have had a rough few games starting the season but now are starting to get into their groove. Bruins were away this past Saturday as they played the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. Dougie Hamilton got the game rolling with a first period goal, Zdeno Chara scored a goal putting the Bruins up 2-0 at the end of the first period. Torey Krug and Carl Soderberg both scored goals in the 2nd period and the final score was 4-0, Bruins. They are 3-4 on the season. The Bruins will host the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night at the Garden at 7 pm.
