Those three words, dildo, masturbation, and marijuana, has Fitchburg State in a frenzy about the upcoming dance show. With only two days left before the two-day event (April 22nd and 23rd), the Dance Club got a bit of a surprise. After dedicating a part of their dance to the broadway musical “RENT” a few students were up in arms over the words that they viewed as vulgar and scandalous. After these students brought their issues with the music up to the advisor and the E-Board, they concluded that the best way to handle the situation was by claiming that the words did not coincide with a “child-friendly activity” and told the club they could not perform that part of their dance.
According to many students, having the school censor their dance this close to the premier is not only unfair to them and their hard work but to their right to dance. One student is quoted as being “allowed to bring weapons on stage, pretend to torture someone, twerk, fake orgasms, have drag queens do whatever they want, but if one song mentions marijuana and dildos the school gets offended.”
These lyrics are found in the “RENT” song La Vie Boheme. IMDb, a recognized and celebrated movie/TV informer website describes the film as the “version of the Pulitzer and Tony Award winning musical about Bohemians in the East Village of New York City struggling with life, love and AIDS, and the impacts they have on America.” The movie is based on a broadway musical that is widely considered one of the best of all time.
The school has had a history of censoring and attempting to censor multiple groups on campus, as well as letting some slip through the cracks. Most would argue that the school should have no right to censor the music, speech, or dance of a club. Where do we let the school draw the line? If you agree that the Dance Club has been treated unfairly by the school waiting until two days before the show please share this article with #DONTCENSORUS.
Editor’s Note: The large controversy that is underlying this whole event is the idea of sex being inappropriate for children. We live in a society that refuses to talk to children about the truth of how they came into the world. You can be sure there was no hiding this fact with the Native Americans and Pilgrims of early America. It is our society that has deemed the words, marijuana, masturbation and dildo not “kid friendly.” There is a huge difference between, masturbation; a verb describing one pleasuring one’s self, and Fuck; a slur created to add force and anger to a word already existing; intercourse. It is the society that is over sexualizing these words and deeming them negative.
