New England Alliance Championship

Fitchburg State University’s (FSU) Indoor Track and Field team participated in the New England Alliance Championship meet this past weekend held at UMass Dartmouth. The men’s team took fourth in MASCACs (Massachusetts Collegiate Athletic Conference), with 66 points, and eighth place, with 47 points, in the entire meet. The women’s team ended up taking fourth in MASCACs, with 71 points, and ninth place, with 34 points, in the entire meet.

Shortly after FSU arrived at the track and got settled, the entire team huddled up in the infield. Clapping ensued into a roar until co-captain of mid-distance, Richard (Rocky) Ethier, said “Alright, guys. It’s MASCACs, this is what we’ve been working for all year. Blood, sweat, and tears let’s go! One team on three. One! Two! Three!” The crowd chanted: “One Team!” The team dispersed and those who were competing shortly began warming up for their events.

FSU got three first place medals in MASCACs, two for the men and one for the women. Brian Amaral won both the 5,000 meter race with a time of 15:21:79 and the 10,000 meter race, won for the whole Alliance, with a time of 32:02:77. Annie Wooley placed first  for MASCACs and second for the Alliance in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.12.

In the 10,000 meter race, Anthony Darrigo placed 6th with a time of 35:00.03. Jessica Mangan placed third with a time of 43:31.54.

In the Steeplechase, Joseph Darrigo placed third with a time of 10:23.42.

In the 400 meter relay, the men’s team, ran by: Nicholas Levenson, Kwaku Mensah, Eric Custadio, and Daniel Nkansah placed fourth with a 44:04 time. The women’s team, ran by: Sprinting Captain Amanda Remmie, Melody Francis, Elizabeth Norman, and Jaquelyn Manyak placed fourth with a time of 54.77.

In the 1,500 meter race, the captain of women’s distance, Nicole Gaffney, placed sixth with a time of 5:08.95.

In the 400 meter dash, Chauncey Beatty , co-captain of mid-distance, placed fourth with a time of 50.23.

In the 100 meter dash, Nicholas Levenson placed sixth with a time of 11.56. Annie Wooley placed fourth in the women’s race.

In the 110 meter hurdle race, Cameron Stalters placed fifth with a time of 16:28.

In the 800 meter race, Rocky Ethier placed fourth with a time of 1:59.45. Shawna Ryan placed fifth for the women’s 800 meter with a time of 2:28.15, barely beating Theresa Connolly from Bridgewater State University by less than a thousandth of a second.

In the 400 Intermediate Hurdle race, Chauncey Beatty placed fifth with a time of 57.20.

In the 200 meter dash, Nicholas Levenson placed fourth with a time of 23.33.

In the 5,000 meter race, Anthony Darrigo placed sixth with a time of 16:58.94 and Casey Taylor placed fifth for the women’s with a time of 20:11.48.

In Shot Put, Captain of Women’s Throwing, Morgan Steele, placed  fourth with a throw of 16.66 meters (14 feet, 11.75 inches).

In Hammer Throw, Morgan Steele placed second place with a throw of 44.71 meters (146 feet, 8 inches).

In the Javelin Throw, Cameron Stalters placed second with a throw of 58.75 (192 feet ,9 inches) and Molly Atkinson placed third for women’s with a throw of 34.73 meters(113 feet ,11 inches).

In the Long Jump, Connor Flynn placed sixth with a jump of 6.12 meters (20 feet, 1 inch).

In the Triple Jump, Akhiel Willis, co-captain of sprinting and jumping placed second with a jump of 13.44 meters (44 feet, 1.25 inches).

In the Pole Vault, Cameron Stalters placed fifth with a vault of 3.50 meters (11 feet, 5 inches). In the women’s vault, Sadie Zbikowski placed second with a vault of 3.05 meters (10 feet), followed by Michella Vecchiorelli with a vault of 2.75 meters (9 feet, 0.25 inches) and Olivia Milsted placed fifth with a vault of 2.60 meters (8 feet, 6.25 inches).

In the High Jump, Ben Sattiewhite placed second with a jump of 2.03 meters (6 feet, 8 inches).

In the 1,600 meter relay, both teams placed fouth. The men’s team ran by: Nicholas Levenson, Chauncey Beatty, Rocky Ethier and Austin Landress ran a time of 3:27.64. The women’s team ran by: Alexis Podedworny, Melody Francis, Elizabeth Norman, and Sadie Zbikowski ran a time of 4:56.75.

In the 3,200 meter relay, both teams placed fourth. The men’s team ran by:Daniel Fournier, Liam Eble, Joseph Chamberlin, and Brandon Hannon ran a time of 8:56.29. The women’s team ran by: Elizabeth Norman, Nicole Gaffney, Shawna Ryan, and Holly Wentworth ran a time of 11:23.33.

Now the team is prepping for the New England DIII Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Nicholas Levenson in the 100 meter dash, Jake Hastings in the 1,500 meter race, Cameron Stalters in the 110 meter High Hurdles, Chauncey Beatty and Nicholas Levenson in the 400 meter Intermediate Hurdles, Ben Sattiewhite in High Jump, Tim Breen in Pole Vault, Akhiel Willis in Triple Jump, and Cameron Stalters in the Javelin. They will be gearing up this week and preparing themselves both physically and mentally for another tough meet.
