***Date has been postponed to Thursday, April 6th, 2017.***
This semester, the Fitchburg State University Dance Club is presenting the fourth annual Dancing with the Staff. The event will be held on Thursday, April 6th at 7 p.m. in Weston Auditorium. Dancing with the Staff is a spinoff version of a dance competition show, called Dancing with the Stars, where celebrities get paired with professional dancers and compete for the mirror ball trophy. For Dancing with the Staff, staff members will be paired up with one of the FSU dancers to compete for a spot in the upcoming Spring Dance Show. Practices for the participants are not publically announced, and it is up to the participants to figure out when they can practice together on their own. Students will get an inside look at the practices during the event, and a group of judges will choose a winner. Any staff members are welcome to try the Dancing with the Staff experience! Last year’s winners Christy Zwicker and Catherine Buell, assistant professor in the math department, did a Kim Possible themed dance and got to perform their routine in the 2016 Spring Dance Show.
Kayla Hunderup, the president of Dance Club said, “We think people should come to the event because it is exciting, fun, and you get to see the staff members/your professor’s dance, which could be funny at times.” Students can also get involved in this event by helping their favorite performances get extra points. Each performance will get their own jar and students can fill these jars with the extra change they may have. The more change a performance gets in their jar, the more points they will receive on top of their final score from the judges. Students will be able to fill the jars during the week leading up to the event.
The Fitchburg State Dance Club is the largest club on campus and is currently the 2015-2016 Organization of the Year. The FSU Dance Club offers a wide variety of classes taught by students on campus. Some of the classes that are offered are Tap, Hip Hop, Irish Step, Jazz, and Ballet. Anyone can audition because you don’t need any dance experience to join the club. The classes Jazz, Tap, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, and Lyrical have different levels. The levels are beginners (Tap 1), intermediate (Tap 2), and advanced. At the end of each semester, the club puts on its annual winter and Spring Dance Shows. For more information about the Dance Club, check out their Facebook page.
Make sure to save the date and your extra change, because this event is going to be one that you won’t want to miss! Who knows, you may see one of your favorite professors dancing across the Weston Auditorium stage. Tickets to the event are $3 and all of the proceeds will go to the Fitchburg State Scholarship Fund!
