Boy meets world is back…sort of

By Wanjiku Kungu

As a ‘90s kid I’m sure that many of us can relate to the shows we watched “back in the day” that shaped our childhoods. Compared to recent popular television, I think we all can agree that things were a little more wholesome back then. That’s why I was so excited to hear that one of my favorite shows, Boy Meets World(BMW) is coming back…well sort of. In the fall of 2012 it was rumored that Disney Channel was developing a television show that would center on the life of BMW characters Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence’s daughter. Those rumors were put to rest by both stars of the sitcom Ben Savage (Cory) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) on social networks. boy

Fans were thrilled when Savage tweeted in late November, “I’m going to be a father! Well, on TV at least. The ‘Boy Meets World’ sequel is officially happening!” And on her Tumblr, Fishel cited BMW fans as the reason why Girl Meets World(GMW) will be made. She continued stating that she and co-creator of BMW Michael Jacobs spoke about fans’ reactions and how proud they were to be a part of such a successful television show that meant a lot to so many people.  “We felt touched by the excitement in your comments, tweets, Tumblr, and Facebook posts… We felt inspired to bring these characters back to life and to tell you more of their stories.” Fishel said. Feeny2

One of those characters coming back will be everyone’s favorite teacher, Mr. Feeny played by William Daniels. A number of behind the scenes pictures on the set of GMW have surfaced and some BMW alum can be spotted with the new cast. There’s no word if other popular characters like Shawn Hunter and Eric Matthews will be joining the show but we’ll keep our fingers crossed for a cameo at the very least. Chosen to play the character of Riley, Cory and Topanga’s daughter is eleven year old Rowan Blanchard (she was in one of the Spy Kids films). Joining Riley will be her older brother Elliot and her best friend Maya, who has had a troubled past. Sound familiar?

In March of 2013, the pilot for GMW was filmed and now the show is waiting to be picked up by Disney. With the success of Boy Meets World (seven seasons and 158 episodes) it doesn’t seem like a bad idea for Disney to give it another shot, but can Girl Meets World have the same, or at least a similar effect on its audiences like the original years ago? We’ll have to wait and see. Danielle Fishel wants fans to keep in mind that the show is not BMW “brought back to life” but a new show. “I promise with the entirety of my heart that we will make GMW with the same honesty, innocence, and intelligence that you learned to expect from BMW.” With that said, I cannot wait for this show.
