September 11, 2001 was a day that changed the world forever. On this day, a surprise attack was launched on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. Almost three thousand people were killed, including 343 New York City firefighters and 72 police officers.
Thirteen years later, the Fitchburg State University community remembers those who were lost. To commemorate those gone but never forgotten, a candlelight vigil has been held on campus for many years now. Also, The Sigma Pi Fraternity began reading the names of the victims last year on the main quad.
Sigma Pi Philanthropy Chairman Matthew Ramsden said, “No matter your political party, 9/11 was an event that affected us as Americans. Sigma Pi is looking to honor all those who were lost on that tragic day.”
To carry on with tradition, this event begins at 8:46 am Thursday morning, the time the first plane struck the first World Trade Center building. All of the names of the fallen will be read on the main quad and an American flag will be present in the foreground. At 8 pm tomorrow night, a candlelight vigil will begin, also on the main quad.
September 11th has affected every American in some way, shape or form. As Americans, we all share the common belief that no matter what happens; we will always stand united together as one country.
To all of the people who died on September 11th, you will never be forgotten.
The campus community is invited to both events on Thursday, September 11th, in honoring the fallen men, women, and children on the main quad.
