Dan Adorn’s Weekly Sports Update 10/28/14

It’s Tuesday and you know what that means, it’s time for the weekly sports update!
Local sports:
Falcons Football had a bye week to reflect on their tough loss at home on family weekend against Western Conn. They are back at it on Nov. 1 against Westfield state in the last home game of the year. Game time is 1:30 pm at Elliot field.
Falcons Hockey is starting back up again. They will begin the season with an ICFCU shootout at Becker college on Oct. 31 at 8 pm.
Falcons Cross Country had a bye week this week. The men and women will compete at the Alliance/MASCAC championship in Williamstown on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Men’s Soccer took on Salem State at home on Oct. 25. This was a big game for the Falcons as it would determine if they would make it to the post-season and they were victorious. They beat Salem State 3-0. First half remained goalless and in the second half, that all changed with a goal scored by Junior Zachary Tracy. Jared Burns also scored a goal and so did Simon Vikoler. The Falcons are now 7-9 on the season and host Springfield college on Tuesday, Oct. 28 at 7 pm.
Falcons Women’s Field Hockey took on Worcester State in a LEC contest on Saturday, Oct. 25 at Elliot Field. It was a close game but thanks to a late game goal, Falcons took home the win. Casey Noonan scored the first goal of the game in the 1st half. Megan Ripke scored a goal for Worcester State tying the game 1-1 in the second half. Bailey Miller scored a late game goal which lead to their win. Good job field hockey! They return to the field on Oct. 29 to host Regis at 7 pm.
Women’s Soccer lost to Salem State 2-1 on Oct. 25. 2 goals for Salem were scored by Kelly Birchman. Fitchburg’s one goal was scored by Devin Donnelly. They now face Worcester State on Nov. 1 at 10 am.
Professional Sports:
The Boston Bruins faced the San Diego Sharks at home on Oct. 21, winning that game 5 to 3 with 3 unanswered third period goals.
They then went on to face the New York Islanders at home on Oct. 23, losing that game 3 to 2.
Most recently, they faced the Toronto Maple Leafs in Toronto on Oct. 25, winning the game 4-1. On Oct. 25, Bruins center and captain Patrice Bergeron scored his 500th NHL career point. Nice job Bergeron. The Bruins will then will take on the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo on Oct. 30 at 7 pm.
The New England Patriots took on the Chicago Bears at Gillette Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 26. Patriots scored first with a 6 yard touchdown pass to Rob Gronkowski. This was the 46th career touchdown for Brady to Gronkowski. In the second quarter, the Patriots went off, scoring 31 points in that quarter. The patriots scored 3 touchdowns in under a minute in the end of the 2nd quarter. The big one was a fumble recovered by Ninkovich and was scored for a touchdown. Tom Brady had an amazing game, throwing for 354 yards and 3 touchdowns. Rob Gronkowski ran for 149 yards and scored 3 touchdowns. Brandon LaFell ran for 124 yards and 1 touchdown and Tim Wright ran for 61 yards and 1 touchdowns Final score was 51 to 23 in favor of the Patriots. The Patriots will now host the Denver Broncos on November 2 for a 4:25 pm kickoff at Gillette stadium.
