It has been an interesting NFL regular season, to say the least, with the Randy Moss saga (or soap opera), unlikely contenders ranging from the once lowly Oakland Raiders to the explosive Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the recent firing of Dallas Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips.
Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he was reluctant to make a coaching change mid-season, but decided the change was “what’s best for the organization and the fans” following an embarrassing 45-7 loss to the Green Bay Packers.
Phillips had been named the head coach of “America’s Team” in 2007.
While winning only one playoff game under his leadership, his teams accrued a 34-20 record and won the tough NFC East division twice.
This season, however, the team is 1-7; their defense ranks last in the league.
 “I don’t think it feels like starting over,” said interim head coach and former offensive coordinator Jason Garrett. “We’ve got a lot of football to be played.”
 “It’s certainly a difficult situation for him coming into the middle of the season,” said starting quarterback Jon Kitna, who has taken over for the injured Tony Romo.
Wade Phillips’ son, Wes Phillips, is the Cowboys quality control/offensive assistant. “It’s tough to see your father get fired,” he said. “At the same time, you know it going into this business.”
The Cowboys try to get back on track this Sunday when they travel to the new Meadowlands Stadium to face the 6-2 New York Giants.
