More than 30 tired DJs got up bright and early last Sunday morning, to take part in the Fitchburg State University radio station’s annual DJ training day. Muffins and drinks were provided and the training for WXPL staff members began right on schedule at 9 a.m., with multiple groups gathering in various parts of Thompson Hall.
“I thought it went really well,” said Lex Mandrake, the new president of WXPL. “I was happy with the direction the board members gave and I felt training went a lot smoother than last year.”
Training topics included learning the different functions of the soundboard, so they could properly execute their shows; strategies for running the office effectively; and becoming familiar with legal information needed to work within Federal Communications Commission guidelines.
“It seemed like we imparted all the important legal information in a fun way,” Mandrake said. “We also stayed within our time limits, which was good.”

Anyone interested in learning more about becoming a radio DJ, or getting involved with WXPL, is invited to attend the weekly meetings on Thursdays at 4:30 p.m. in Ellis White Lecture Hall, Hammond Building. WXPL has a busy schedule for the month of October, and can be seen at a variety of campus events. Those who would like to become DJs, but missed last week’s training day, can sign up for one-on-one training.
