Fitchburg State University offers a vibrant opportunity for enjoyment during the autumn semester through its homecoming weekend festivities, particularly during carnival night. The school’s Office of Student Development organizes this event, which welcomes students, alumni and community members to participate in the celebrations. The annual carnival night was on Friday, Oct. 18, at 3:30, and held in Ross Lot.
This traditional event provides a space for individuals to unwind and create lasting memories with friends and family, offering a welcome distraction from the stresses of the academic semester. It is crucial to prioritize being present and enjoying oneself while also cherishing the presence of family members, particularly the joy reflected in children’s faces as they create lasting memories. Whether it is your first time attending such an event or marking a significant milestone, it is essential to appreciate the experience and opportunity for bonding and creating cherished memories.
As the day progressed into the late evening, the initial warmth of the weather gave way to colder temperatures, dropping to freezing levels for individuals without jackets. Additionally, visitors could observe lights of the rides upon either entering or exiting through the front entrance. Students were granted free admission, whereas guests had to buy tickets beforehand. Children under the age of 12 were charged $5.00 for entry.
This year two food trucks were available on the premises, requiring payment at the time of purchase, although attendees were given discount tickets upon arrival. The new food trucks may have had some minor inconveniences, it was not overly burdensome and the dining hall remained opened. Five amusement rides were available, including bumper cars, a super slide and a hang glider. There were interactive booths arranged for two games: basketball and a bean bag toss, with prizes including balloon batons, monkeys, emoji face keychains, toys and more. Additional prizes were awarded for successfully knocking out two faces of the clowns.
Victoria Feldman discussed the enjoyable experience of meeting new people, particularly for incoming freshmen adjusting to a new environment and campus life. Stepping out of one’s comfort zone and socializing with others was emphasized as a positive aspect of the experience. The excitement of interacting with others and witnessing their enjoyment, laughter and screams while trying out rides such as bumper cars was noted. Jordan DeGrenier highlighted the exhilarating aspect of riding the hang glider, feeling like a superhero while soaring. The thrill of hitting friends while driving bumper cars was also mentioned as a fun part of the experience. The experience was generally positive, with a pleasant evening filled with laughter, friendly company and a sense of brightness even in the darkness. It left a good impression on all those who attended. For those who missed this event, there will be another one next semester, as this tradition continues annually. Be sure to come with a relaxed attitude, as that is truly the essence of the event and a little bit of fun never hurts.
