Hey sports fans, it’s Tuesday so you all know what that means. It’s time for the weekly sports highlights.
Local Sports:
Figured we should start off with our local sports, so let’s start with our very own Fitchburg Falcons football team. After suffering a tough loss to Framingham the week before, the Falcons were eager to get themselves back on track this week versus the Bears of Bridgewater. Falcons beat Bridgewater at Bridgewater 21 to 17.
Sophomore quarterback Garrett Dellechiaie threw for 409 yards and two touchdowns. Senior safety Elizear Torres returned an interception 29 yards for the game-winning touchdown.
At the end of the first half the Falcons were down by three and they were determined to win and they sure did deliver. Congrats on the win, Falcons. The Falcons will host Mass Maritime Academy this Saturday, Oct. 4 on Elliot Field at 1:30 p.m.
On Sept. 27 the cross-country team participated in the Worcester City meet in Paxton. The men scored 113 points and finished fifth, while the women scored 107 points and finished fourth. Not a bad run for the Falcons. Good job both teams. The Falcons are away next weekend as they will face Keene State on Oct. 4 at 10 a.m.
On Sept. 26 the men’s soccer team faced the men of Mass Maritime Academy on their home field. It was a hard-fought loss for the Falcons losing 2 to 1. Get ‘em next time, boys. The Falcons now face Nichols on our home field on Oct. 1 at 7 p.m.
On Sept. 27 the women’s soccer team faced Mass Maritime on Falcons home field and after double overtime, the women came away with a tie. Nice job, girls. Goals scored by Abbey Norden and Victoria Floeck. Next game will be on Sept. 30 at New England College at 7 p.m.
On Sept. 27 the women’s field hockey team was at Bridgewater. It was a hard-fought loss for the Falcons after an overtime goal scored by Bridgewater sealed the deal. Good effort, girls. Next game is Sept. 30 at 7 p.m. against Eastern Connecticut State University at Elliot Field.
Pro Sports
MLB: Red Sox are finally done. After finishing 71-91 for the season it was anything but glamorous for the Sox. Nothing like last season when they were well in first place most of the season and heading to the postseason. It appears that the Sox let the fame get to their heads. Maybe next season boys.
NHL: Bruins started preseason games. Looking like the team has potential this year. More details to come as the season starts to get underway Oct. 11.
NFL: Patriots appear to not have gotten off the plane when they landed at Kansas City Monday night. After losing 41 to 14 it was a rough outing for Tom Brady and the Patriots. Let’s all hope the Pats can turn this around ASAP as they are now 2-2 on the season. They host the Bengals next weekend at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night.
