Are you looking for something different to do this semester? Why not join the brand new English Club? Formed as recently as September, the English club is looking for members, and welcomes anyone interested in discussing English studies.
When asked about details of the point of the club, Jill Mulholland, the president of the club, had this to say: “The purpose of the Fitchburg University English Club is about facilitating meaningful discussions related to English studies amongst students and faculty alike and to share the passion about the subject matter.”
Currently the club consists of the president, Mulholland, vice president Emily Antonelli, as well as roughly 10 other members. The club provides a welcoming and enthusiastic environment to anyone who is there.
The English Club is nearing the end of the paperwork stage of becoming an official club and waiting approval from the SGA. Once this happens they will be able to have more events on campus that would be open to people outside of the club. They would love to reach out to more members through these events once they are officially recognized as a club.
This month, they will be taking part in Nanowrimo, or National Novel Writing Month, where the goal is to write a 50,000-word novel during the month. However, the English Club is thinking of perhaps doing a smaller version of Nanowrimo, where instead of a 50,000 word- novel for the month, it will be a short story based on a goal of 5,000 words or something similar. Partakers in the English Club will be able to share ideas and workshop about their ideas throughout the month as some members are also working on the larger goal outside of the club.
Nanowrimo is not going to be their only focus in November. The club will have a discussion theme of the detective-fiction genre. Each month will have a different theme, where the club will be discussing short stories that fall into the category of the month.
The English Club meets on Wednesdays at 4 p.m., in Miller Hall. If you are interested in taking part in the club or would like further information you may contact the club president by e-mail at [email protected] or show up to the next meeting to check it out.
