Volunteer Awareness Month kicked off in a big way with the Volunteer Fair on the Hammond quad, where agencies such as Red Cross, Salvation Army and the Boys and Girls club recruited volunteers.

According to Shane Franzen, associate director of student development, the turnout was great. “We had some really good numbers … it was much better than the fair in October,” says Franzen. “We moved it outside and paired it up with the Greek counsel and Commuter Affairs.”

Didn’t go to the Volunteer Fair? Don’t worry. Leah Bianchi, president of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority, says, “This month is filled with volunteer opportunities.” More than 20 volunteer events were planned for April by Student Development and the Volunteer Center, including the Stiletto Run to benefit the American Heart Association on April 25 at 3:30 p.m. on Highland Avenue, and the City Clean-up running from mid-April until mid-May.

“People believe that [volunteering] could be a waste of their time,” said Bianch. “But taking a couple of hours out of your week to help someone other than yourself helps the community.”
