“…you should just do something that makes you happy”

“What are your plans after college?”

“That’s a hard question. So right now I’m studying to be an accountant. Hopefully, I can become an accountant by the time I graduate. I’m supposed to graduate in May so hopefully it all goes as planned. I also would like to settle down and maybe get my own place with my friend who’s more like a sister to me. It should work out well. It’s kind of scary going out into the real world, so I try not to think about it too much.”

“How do you really feel about Fitchburg State University?”

“I like this school because it’s small and it reminds me of when I was in high school. I always went to small schools. Everything is together; small classrooms and more one on ones. I don’t have to be in a classroom with like fifty people or more. Here, it’s usually twenty people to a class which is what it was like in high school. That’s one of the reasons I chose to come here. I have to say though that in the winter, it kind of sucks to walk around since the campus isn’t cleaned that well. I should also add how much it sucks to walk to McKay in the winter. I’m always slipping and falling. It sucks, but overall it’s not too bad. Some of the professors are pretty good and the classes are pretty good. I like that it’s not too far from home so I can come and go when I want.”

“Did your dreams about yourself as a kid change now that you’re an adult?”

“I would say that they didn’t really change that much. When I was younger, I used to love math which is weird because everyone thinks math sucks, but I really like it. At one point, I do remember wanting to be a math teacher. When I first came here to Fitchburg State, my goal was to be a math major and be a math teacher. It was something that I wanted to do. Now it’s starting to change. Like do I really want to major in math? Maybe I’m not that great at it and maybe it’s not that simple. So I’m not going into teaching anymore. I’m going into business, accounting, and stuff like that. I guess in that aspect they did change a little bit. For the most part, I feel like I’m going in the right direction. It’s working out.

“Do you think your parents are proud with the major you chose?”

“My mother contradicts herself all the time. When I wanted to be a teacher, she would always be like ‘You should study business. Blah blah blah. It’s going to leave a lot of money. Study accounting, that’s better’. I was always like, ‘No, I want to do teaching’. Later on, I changed my major to accounting and she was like ‘Oh I thought you wanted to be a teacher. What happened?’ She literally went on about how she wanted me to do that and was now asking why I’m doing this. It was very annoying. So then I thought, ‘Maybe I should do Exercise and Sports Science and minor with Fitness Management’ and my mom was like ‘Yeah, you should just do something that makes you happy’. I always wondered why she always contradicted herself. First she would say, ‘No, you should do this’ and then turn around and say ‘No, you should do that’. So now, I’m going with my gut and doing my own thing because I’m the one who’s going to be happy in the end, not her.”
