Hey Sports fans it’s that time again, time for the weekly recap of sports. So lets get it going because we got a lot to talk about.
Local Sports:
The Falcons of Fitchburg State took on the Westfield State Owls for the final home game of the season at Elliot Field on Nov1. Despite a long hard fought battle with multiple injuries and degrading weather conditions, the Falcons were unable to come away with a win, losing with a final score of 28-14. Touchdowns were scored by Trayvon Neal and Taylor Ekstrom. Garrett Dellechiaie threw for 143 yards. Falcons now head to Umass Dartmouth for a 1 pm kickoff on Saturday.
Falcons Mens and Womens cross country raced in Williamstown, MA in the MASCAC championship. The men finished 6th overall (3rd in MASCAC) and the women finished eighth (fifth overall). Freshman Jake Hastings came in sixth overall and second in MASCAC and was awarded rookie of the year. Good job to both teams on a great season.
Fitchburg State Men’s Ice Hockey took to the ice for the first time this season. They faced Wentworth in the home opener at the Civic Center. Mike Fish was the first to score for the Falcons. Unfortunately, the Falcons ended up losing the game 3 to 1. They now head to New England College on Tuesday Nov. 4th for a 7 pm puck drop.
Mens soccer faced Worcester State in Worcester on Nov 1. It was a great game for the Falcons as they shutout Worcester State 1-0. The Falcons were victorious after an overtime goal scored by Simon Vikoler. The regular season ended 8-10. Good job men. They now move on to compete for the MASCAC championship. This is the first time in 10 years that soccer team has been in the post-season. Good luck men. The first game of the MASCAC quarterfinals will be held on Nov 4 at 7 pm on the Falcons home turf.
Womens soccer also faced Worcester State in their last game of the season and were not as lucky as the men were. They were shutout 4-0. They finished the season 3-14-1. Better luck next season.
Womens field hockey faced off against Southern Maine in Maine for their last game of the season and ended up winning the game 2-1. Goals for Fitchburg were scored by Bailey Miller and Madeline Hoffman. They end the season 8-10. Good season girls!
Professional sports:
Bruins faced off on Saturday Nov 1. against the Ottawa Senators in Boston. Bruins were victorious winning the game 4 to 2. Brad Marchand(4), Matt Fraser(2), and Dennis Seidenberg(1) all scored that game. Fraser scored his first two goals of the season in this game. Bruins look like they are in a real groove now even though they are missing Zdeno Chara, Kevan Miller, and Tory Krug to injuries, but they did gain back David Krejci so as its been, the Bruins appear to be doing somewhat well. They now face off against the Florida Panthers at the garden for a 7 pm puck drop. On a side note, the Bruins head coach Claude Julien was re-signed by the bruins to a multi-year contract on Nov. 2.
The New England Patriots hosted the Denver Broncos on Sunday Nov 2 at Gillette Stadium and boy was it a great game. Before the game even started, the weather was just not cooperating with snow and rain mix, cold temperatures, and gusty winds, but this did not stop Tom Brady and his patriots from taking care of business and winning the game 43-21. Tom Brady threw for 333 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Touchdowns were scored by Rob Gronkowski(1), Julian Edelman(1), Brandon LaFell(1), and Shane Vereen(1). It was a great game for the Patriots. They showed the Broncos that they came to play and that they came to win. Patriots now have a week off before they head out to play the Colts in two weeks.
