Hey sports fans, it’s time for the weekly sports recap!
Local Sports:
Fitchburg Men’s Basketball are currently 5-0 this season. They have won more games in the beginning of this season then they did all of last season. Recently, they took on Rivier and won with a score of 84-68. They are averaging 79.8 points per game so far this season. Their next game is against Umass Boston tonight at home at 7:30 pm.
Women’s basketball is currently 3-0 this season. They are averaging 76 points per game. They recently played at Pine Manor and won that game 83-75. Their next game is tonight against Umass Boston at 5:30pm.
The men’s hockey team appears to be struggling this season with a slow start. They are currently 1-4-2. They are averaging 2.14 goals per game and 28.3 shots per game. They recently played at Framingham State on 11/20 and that was their first win of the season and it was a shutout, 4-0. Fitchburg’s Ryan Connolly scored a power play goal 17 seconds into the start of the 2nd period. Another goal was then scored by Jon Johannesson just 10 seconds after that goal. Paul Falanga scored a goal 18:18 into the 2nd period and Cameron Snyder scored a goal 18:58 into the 3rd period. Goalie Ryan Wysocki collected 38 saves for this game. It is still early in the season so the Falcons can hopefully recover the rest of the season and maybe when they get some players back from injuries they will perform better. Their next game will be on Saturday 11/29 at Southern N.H. for a 4:30 pm faceoff.
Professional Sports:
In the past week, the Boston Bruins have faced the Blues, Blue Jackets, Canadiens, and the Penguins. All games resulted in wins for the Bruins except for the game against the Canadians and Penguins. The Bruins won against the Blues on 11/18 with a score of 2-0. Bruins won against the Blue Jackets on 11/21 in a 4-3 overtime 7 round shootout goal by Alex Khokhlachev. Bruins lost on 11/22 against the Canadiens 2-0. Finally, on 11/24 the Bruins lost to the Penguins 3-2 in overtime. The next games for the Bruins will be on 11/28 against the Jets at 7:00 pm at the garden.
Patriots had a good day on Sunday 11/23 against the Detroit Lions. They won 34-9. Tom Brady threw for 349 yards and 2 touchdowns. LeGarrette Blount scored 2 touchdowns for 78 yards. Next game for the Patriots will be on 11/30 at 4:25 pm against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. This is sure to be one exciting game for the patriots.
The Boston Celtics are currently 4-8 on the season and are 3rd in the Atlantic Division. They recently played the 76ers and won with a score of 101-90. They then lost their next two games against the Grizzlies 100-117 and to the Trail Blazers 94-88. The Celtics now host the Bulls on 11/28 and the Spurs on 11/30.
The Red Sox have been busy in the off-season. The Red Sox on 11/24 came to an agreement for a four-year, $88 million deal with the option for a fifth year for $22 million with Hanley Ramirez. Pablo Sandoval is also heading to the Red Sox and will be earning about a $100 million from the team over the next 5 years to play third base. The outfield is gridlocked currently. Hopefully the Red Sox will go shopping for some pitchers soon and John Lester is still interested in returning to the Red Sox for next season. They cannot depend on Buchholz alone for starting the rotation.
