On September 22, 18 Fitchburg State alumni field hockey players came together for the annual alumni game. This year the alum game was hosted in Landry Arena for the first time. As the athletic facility opened in the Spring of 2018, most alum have not had the chance to see the new state of the art athletic facility added to campus.

Whether a past Falcon is 20 years out or four months post graduate, everyone is encouraged to pick up a stick and reconnect with past teammates. Head Coach Kim Cosenza expressed her thoughts on connecting with past alum, whether she coached the players for a season or coached against them.

It is so great to see so many former players come back and share their stories and experiences. It’s amazing to hear that we are still upholding traditions like linking pinkies during the national anthems, doing the “Friendly Falcon” and smashing pumpkins,” said Cosenza. As each year holds new variation of names on the roaster, the Falcons continue to carry on decade old traditions that seem to grow and continue to stay alive.

Cosenza, who is in her second season as the Head Coach, expressed how important it is to support the growing relationship of alumni engagement with current players and past. To help close the gap between past and present players, Cosenza is hoping to put together an alumni newsletter. This year Cosenza also initiated a jersey ceremony for current players and invited former player, Courtney Books, to speak about what makes wearing the green and gold so special.

As the alumni numbers for the program is only going up, Cosenza wishes that current players “recognize the life long relationships that they have formed and that they too invest in those relationships with each other and alumni.”
