Catmobile to the rescue!

The Catmobile makes its rounds during all seasons.

The Catmobile is here! Today the Catmobile will be at the Fire Station at 33 North St, where  professionals will spay a female cat for $100 and neuter a male cat for $75, as well as provide exams and shots for cats for a lower cost than a veterinarian would.

It is important for cat owners to spay or neuter their cats. according to Stacy LeBaron, president of the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society; there is a  large amount of cats in the area because they are able to breed so freely. The result is the 800 to 1,000 stray or feral cats in the Fitchburg area. Cat owners often do not spay or neuter their cats because they can’t afford it, she said. Many residents are forced to move to a place that does not accept cats, or worse, they can no longer afford to keep the cat anymore; as a result many cats become abandoned or end up at a shelter.
“Abandonment rates are so high that we can’t handle all of the cats,” says LeBaron. “Because of the abandonment rate, 40 percent of adult cats in shelters are euthanized.”
Groups and shelters such as the MRFRS, the city of Fitchburg, Second Chance Fund for Animal Welfare, and Shelter Me are collaborating to address this problem. One of the ways in which the MRFRS is addressing this issue is by sending out the Catmobile. To book an appointment to have a cat spayed or neutered on the Catmobile, call 1-978-465-1940 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.  Monday through Friday or email [email protected].  You can also check out their adoption information and fill out an online application. They have the whole adoption process explained on the site.
