A popular novel by John Green, The Fault in Our Stars “is the story of Hazel Lancaster and Augustus Waters, two Indianapolis teenagers who meet at a Cancer Kid Support Group” as described on his website johngreenbooks.com. The book is his Green’s fourth solo novel and a film adaptation by 20th Century Fox directed by Josh Boone will be released June 6th of this year. There is much anticipation and excitement surrounding the release of the film adaptation as social media sites buzz. Conversations on Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr have erupted as June draws closer.

The plot of the novel centers around Hazel and Augustus, two teenagers whose lives have been thrown together by a support group for cancer patients and a mutual friend, Isaac. Hazel Grace Lancaster is afflicted by stage 4 Thyroid cancer with metastasis forming in her lungs, and Augustus “Gus” Waters has lost his leg to osteosarcoma, though he is in remission. Their relationship deepens throughout the novel, but not without its share of troubles. Hazel pulls away from Augustus as she tries to come to terms with her inevitable death and figure out what position that puts her in as far as Augustus is concerned. Together, they learn how to make the best of the situation that they have been placed in, and discover the beauty in each other that may have seemed lost in their plight. In the novel, it is written that John Green’s inspiration for the title of the novel came from Shakespeare’s line from Julius Caesar. (Act 1, scene 2)[unclear if parentheses go with preceding or following sentence] The nobleman Cassius says to Brutus, ‘The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, / But in ourselves, that we are underlings.’

During the filming of the adaptation, John Green himself was on set. The author was an active part of production and filming, and made video blogs discussing the process of watching his novel come to life under lights and actors. You can see John Green’s video blogs (or vlogs) on his aforementioned website or on his Youtube channel. In these vlogs, Green discusses a plethora of topics such as the casting choice, the mystery behind multiple angles for one scene in a film, quality porter-potties and other John Green goodness that anyone familiar with the author may expect.

The novel has been graced with being #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, #1 on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list, #1 on Indiebound bestseller list, and more. The Fault in Our Stars was showered in positive reviews from both critics and fans, as the sweet and melancholy story of these star crossed lovers buries itself into your heart.
