The Fitchburg State Softball team dropped two games to Worcester State on Saturday, setting back their record to 9-11. Worcester State improved to 9-12-1 with the pair of wins over the Falcons, rallying behind two solid pitching performances.

The Lancers got off to a hot start in the first game, as Emily Bartlett homered to right center in the top of the first. Worcester took the momentum and ran with it, scoring two more runs off an RBI single by Grace Adams in the top of the second. The Lancers continued their attack in the third, putting up 4 runs to take a 7-0 lead into the fourth. Fitchburg finally got on to the scoreboard in the fourth, scoring their sole run on a sacrifice bunt, followed by a throwing error. This would be all the damage that the Falcons would do however, as the game ended in a 7-1 defeat. Emily Bartlett dominated on the mound for Worcester, pouring in seven innings and allowing only two hits. Tayler Colvin was tagged with the loss for Fitchburg, making it through two and two thirds innings while allowing 5 earned runs.

Worcester State was able to capitalize on another great start offensively in the second game. The Lancers jumped out to a two run lead in the top of the first off of consecutive RBI singles. The Falcons threatened briefly in the first, loading the bases before a strikeout ended the inning. Fitchburg was able to cash in on a double from Molly Grass in the second, as they attempted to eliminate the deficit. Worcester continued to have success with the bats however, putting up runs in the third and fourth innings. The Falcons were able to put hits together down the stretch, before Dana Cisowski was able to cut the deficit to one on an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth. Unfortunately for the Falcons, the Lancers were able to tack on two runs in the top of the seventh, pushing the lead to 6-3. This is how it would stay, as the Falcons put up a zero in the final frame. Jen Thornburn worked through seven innings for Worcester, striking out six in a winning decision. Hayley O’Brien was given the loss for the Falcons despite going all seven innings. Molly grass had a 3 hit day in what was otherwise a quiet offensive performance for Fitchburg.

The Falcons will take on Bridgewater State for a double header at home on Friday, before heading to Bridgewater on Saturday to close out their regular season.
